A Scary New Reality

Remember how back in December I hinted at an allergic reaction Holden had after touching something that had touched shrimp?

Check it out here to see photos of his swelling the next morning. As soon as we got back from Colorado and the holidays had all wound down I took him into the doctor for a blood test. As you can imagine, it didn’t go well, but my brave little guy made it happen.

He knows exactly what’s abut to happen, and he is NOT on board…

These pictures kill me. He was so upset, but it turns out it was well worth it. The test came back with allergies for Shrimp, Scallops, Tuna, Salmon and Cod. Scallops and Tuna are high, but Shrimp was about as high as you can get. The doctors immediately armed us with multiple epi-pens and we passed them out among our various bags and to the school nurse. Isla was especially interested in learning how to use them and practiced multiple times with the dummy injector.

The craziest thing is that we had this exact allergy test a couple years before and he showed no positivity for any of the allergies. Just so scary how it can crop up on you like that.

It’s taken a little getting used to, and we rarely cook with anything in the house that would be an issue. When we do, it’s honestly too overwhelming trying to disinfect every surface for us to even enjoy the food. We’ve gotten used to informing restaurants of his allergy just in case, and I always make sure I have an epi-pen wherever we go.

So proud of my brave little boy, and his instant instinct that told him one of his favorite foods was infected with something that was really bad for him back in December. That night could have gone very differently and I’m obviously so glad that it didn’t.
